Hunt for the Wilderpeople (PG) (2016)

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a laugh out loud comedy, which takes the viewers on a great adventure, exploring the themes of family, loss, survival, belonging and community.

The film stars Julian Dennison as the rebellious, witty Ricky, who has been moved from foster home to foster home and therefore has developed a tough exterior but is craving a place to call home. The other star of the film is Sam Neill as Hector Faulkner, Ricky’s foster father, who struggles to bond with others, but through the events of the film becomes a loveable hero.

After a tragedy Ricky runs away into the wilderness resulting in Hector being forced to follow him. Following a series of unfortunate events, the two are thrown into an adventure as they try to escape the police, the locals and wild boars! Along the way Ricky makes some new friends and Hector and Ricky bond, becoming an unstoppable duo.

The messages within the film are lovely and its subtle comedy is sure to please viewers. This film can be viewed on Kanopy for free with a library membership. It is a great family movie; however, I would recommend it to children aged 12+ due to some of the themes explored, infrequent language and low violence scenes.
