Extending the Expiry Date of an Existing Planning Permit

Most planning permits state the dates that a development and/or a particular use must be started or completed by.

The permit must allow the use and/or development that has been started.

As the owner or occupier of the land, or with the written consent of the owner, you can apply to extend the start or completion date of an existing planning permit either:

  • before or within 6 months after the permit expiry date, where the use or development the permit allows has not yet started; or
  • within 12 months after the permit expiry date, where the development allowed by the permit has lawfully started before the permit expires.

If you make a request outside that time, Council cannot grant an extension of time. No other authority can either. The permit will expire.

If you are not the owner or occupier of the land, you must provide a copy of the written consent of the owner with your application.

What you must provide when you apply

  • a completed Application for Extension of time to a Planning Permit form if submitting via email, post or in person (Note: this form is not required if your application is submitted via the Online Planning Portal)
