Heritage Hill Community Open Day

Across the year, Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens invites our local community to experience heritage in new ways through four seasonal Community Open Days.

Each event connects to exhibitions, stories, and the changing gardens, offering welcoming activities for all ages — from creative workshops and discovery trails to picnicking, storytelling, and hands-on exploration.

Whether you visit once or join us throughout the year, each Open Day offers a chance to connect with the people, places, and stories that shape Greater Dandenong.

Different themes will be explored each quarter.

September's theme:

The Secret Life of Gardens – Spring Discovery Day

As the gardens come alive in spring, this Open Day celebrates the exhibition The Secret Life of Gardens and the changing role gardens play in our lives.

Families can follow a discovery trail through the historic gardens, learning how gardens have evolved over time — from kitchen gardens that grew food, to ornamental landscapes and today’s sustainable backyard spaces.

Children can take part in bug hunts, seed planting, and nature-based art activities, while visitors of all ages are invited to share stories about plants that connect them to culture, family, and home.

This spring celebration shows how gardens are living history — places where nature, culture, and community grow together.

Accessibility

We warmly welcome visitors with disabilities and assistance dogs. While the historic houses offer some degree of accessibility, there are uneven paths and steps throughout the gardens that may be difficult for those with wheelchairs, mobility aids and strollers. Please speak with staff for assistance during your visit.
