Road Safety Improvements – Bryants Road, Dandenong

Project overview

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP), in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), established the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program (SLRSP) to fund and deliver road safety infrastructure on local roads, working with all 79 Victorian councils to prioritise upgrades on the highest risk roads, intersections and precincts.

Through this program, Greater Dandenong City Council has received $431,000 (GST inclusive) in full funding to deliver road safety improvements along Bryants Road, Dandenong.

Why is this happening?

The proposed works aim to slow vehicle speeds, discourage industrial traffic, and reduce noise and vehicle damage along Bryants Road between Podmore Street and Kirkham Road, while improving safety and reducing crash risk for all road users, including residents, pedestrians and cyclists.

What’s changing?

The works include speed cushions near 30 Bryants Road, intersection upgrades at Bryants Road and Podmore Street featuring a raised platform and kerb extensions, and a raised platform outside 39 Bryants Road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the speed cushions and raised platforms result in noise pollution or vehicle damage?

Speed cushions and raised platforms are designed in accordance with Australian Standards and are not expected to generate significant noise or cause vehicle damage. When driven over at low speeds, the impact is minimal, while still promoting safer driving and supporting a comfortable local road environment. If these measures successfully reduce truck traffic through residential areas, overall traffic noise is also expected to decrease following implementation.

How were the locations for the proposed safety treatments determined?

Raised platforms are carefully selected and placed by road safety experts to maximise speed reduction, considering factors like drainage and lighting. Treatments are targeted where they will deliver the greatest safety benefits for all road users.

Will parking be reduced?

A small number of parking spaces (approximately three/four) will be removed to support safety improvements, but surveys show enough capacity nearby to accommodate this without significant impact.

Will the Give Way be adhered to?

The modified intersection has been designed in accordance with Australian Standards, incorporating signage and kerb outstands to clearly guide vehicles along Podmore Street. In response to community feedback, additional advance warning signage will also be installed on approaches to the intersection to help motorists understand the new arrangement.

In the past, once road users have become familiar with the changes, compliance has been consistently high, when Council has implemented similar treatments across the municipality.

Will traffic be impacted during construction?

Yes. Some temporary traffic impacts are expected during construction, but these will be actively managed and are outweighed by long-term safety benefits.
