Project Overview

Council is planning road safety improvements along McCrae Street, between Foster Street and Dandenong Creek.

The project aims to reduce the risk of crashes and injuries, improve safety for people walking and riding bikes, and create a safer and more accessible street for everyone who uses it.

The proposed improvements respond to the road safety issues identified through crash data, traffic surveys and community feedback. They will also help improve connections between the Dandenong Creek Trail and the wider cycling network, making it easier and safer for people to travel by bike.

Council has secured approximately $2.6 million in funding through the Australian Government's Black Spot Program and the Victorian Government's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program to deliver the project.

The proposed works include a lower speed limit, protected cycling infrastructure, upgraded bus stops, raised safety platforms at intersections, a new raised pedestrian crossing, intersection improvements and changes to traffic movements designed to reduce conflict points and improve safety.

Before the design is finalised, Council is seeking community feedback to help ensure the project meets the needs of residents, businesses and all road users.

Why is this happening?

Between August 2019 and March 2025, there were 26 crashes along this section of McCrae Street. A total of 78 people were injured, including vulnerable road users such as a pedestrian and two motorcyclists.

Traffic surveys also show that many drivers travel above the current 60 km/h speed limit. Higher speeds increase the likelihood of crashes and the severity of injuries when crashes occur.

To help address these issues, Council has secured funding through the Australian Government's Black Spot Program and the Victorian Government's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

The proposed improvements aim to:

  • reduce the risk of crashes and injuries
  • encourage safer driving speeds
  • improve safety for people walking and riding bikes
  • provide better connections to the wider cycling network
  • improve access to bus stops and crossing points

How will these improvements help?

  • People walking
The new raised crossing and intersection upgrades will make it easier and safer to cross McCrae Street, including near the school and aged care facility. Unlike the current children's crossing, the new raised crossing will provide a dedicated crossing point throughout the day.
  • People riding bikes
The protected cycle lane will provide a safer connection between the Dandenong Creek Trail and the wider cycling network.
The proposed design aims to create a more comfortable environment for people of different ages and riding abilities.
  • Public transport users
Upgraded bus stops will improve access for passengers and support safer movement around the bus stop area.
  • Drivers
Lower speed limits, raised safety platforms and intersection improvements will help reduce the risk and severity of crashes along the corridor.
