Dandenong Park Playground Redevelopment
Work is now underway to expand the playground at Dandenong Park, with the new design shaped by community feedback gathered through a series of workshops.
The expanded playground will combine nature-based play with traditional equipment, including swings, a trampoline and a central feature play tower with climbing, bridging and sliding elements. The design also provides more opportunities for sensory play, improved accessibility and comfort, and greater use of natural materials that reflect the character of the park.
The new play area will connect with the existing playground through complementary materials, colours and planting, and will be fully fenced and gated to support safe and inclusive access.
The project is expected to be complete in 2027.
About the park
Dandenong Park covers more than 17 hectares, with Dandenong Creek and the regional bike trail running through the park.
The park includes Shepley Oval, a historic home of sport in Dandenong, with local football and cricket clubs established there in 1874.
The Riverside Precinct includes a playground and large picnic area with BBQs, seating, picnic tables and shelters. It also features heritage interpretive signage recognising the former RSL Drill Hall and the park’s River Red Gums.
Project information
The playground expansion forms part of the Dandenong Park Regional Leisure Precinct Master Plan 2007.
The design for the Riverside Precinct of Dandenong Park was completed in 2011–12, with separate stages delivered over time. These have included the existing playground, picnic area, interpretive artwork and major path works.
The existing playground design uses the colour red as a reference to Dandenong’s industrial and manufacturing heritage.
The current project expands the playground in response to the popularity and use of the Riverside Precinct, providing a broader range of play opportunities for different ages and abilities.
