The Maze: Past, Present and Legacy

At Heritage Hill, step into the origins of a landmark community arts project that shaped generations. In 1991, The Maze emerged as a three-dimensional mural of richly painted emotions and hand-sculpted experiences—a labyrinth of quiet thoughts, intense feelings, and cultural diversity. Over 14 months, more than 100 young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds worked with artist Suesy Circosta and her team to explore harmony in a world of many options. Together, they transformed papier-mâché into a powerful expression of identity, creativity, and belonging.     
                 
This exhibition revisits the stories behind The Maze: the friendships formed, the challenges faced, and the impact on young lives and careers. Through archival material, interviews, and reflections, The Maze: Past, Present and Legacy explores the social currency of grassroots arts projects and their role in connecting cultures and communities.
