Hemmings Street Shopping Centre Streetscape Improvements

Background

The City of Greater Dandenong has engaged Urban Civil to undertake the Hemmings Street, Dandenong West, upgrade works between Jones Road and Purdy Avenue. 

These works follow a community consultation process which provided feedback and ideas on how to improve the overall amenity and appearance of this neighbourhood shopping strip.

Stage One - Completed Work

The City of Greater Dandenong has engaged Urban Civil to undertake the Hemmings Street, Dandenong West, upgrade works between Jones Road and Purdy Street.

These works follow a community consultation process which provided feedback and ideas on how to improve the overall amenity and appearance of this neighbourhood shopping strip.

The works included:

• New asphalt pavements along the northern side of Hemmings Street between Jones Road and Purdy Street
• The installation of a raised pavement at Wilma Avenue and Hemmings Street intersection to improve safety and amenity of the pedestrian crossing
• Provision for safer pedestrian crossing and movement in and around the shopping centre
• Realigning of kerb to create and prepare the garden beds to allow space for future landscaping

Stage one construction was completed on Monday 20 July 2020.

Stage Two - Current Work

Stage Two works will be undertaken throughout 2020-21.

The works include:

• New asphalt pavements along East side of Jones Road, West and East side of Wilma Avenue and West side of Purdy Street to the North of Hemmings Street
• New street furniture and plantings
• Public Art

Possible disruptions

During construction there will be some disruptions to the precinct. A site manager will advise affected businesses in advance.

Council is expecting the following changed conditions:

• Footpath access in the work zone will be disrupted and each affected business will be advised on the duration of the works.
• Reduced speed limits and traffic flow on Jones Road, Wilma Avenue and Purdy Street North of Hemmings Street for the duration of the works.
• Parking restrictions on Jones Road, Wilma Avenue and Purdy Street for the duration of the works.

Future Stages

Future stages of the work will include:

• Relocation of the toilet block and installation of a new pocket park
• The relocation of the toilet block and installation of the new pocket park will follow the final completion of the main streetscape works
