Gender Equity at Council (Council News Article March 2024)

Women meeting

Greater Dandenong City Council celebrates International Women’s Day in 2024 knowing that it is taking steps towards gender equality in our workplaces and in the community.

The Gender Equality Act 2020 requires local governments to eliminate the systemic causes of gender inequality in policy, programs and delivery of services in workplaces and communities. Put simply, Council is obligated to take action to progress equality and respect for all genders.

Council’s Gender Equity Action Plan 2021-2025 sets out actions to address inequality in the workplace, including when it comes to recruitment, training and promotion of staff.

Externally, Council undertakes a gender impact assessment of all new policies and funding proposals - to ensure all community members are taken into account when considering services and activities.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Lana Formoso said International Women’s Day was a key date to celebrate.

“International Women’s Day is important to celebrate the contribution of women in our community, as colleagues, volunteers, friends and family members. But we should remember that every day is an opportunity to promote equality.”
