Springvale’s Bun Bun Bakery has been named Victoria’s best bánh mì in the state government’s Vic’s Picks Awards in November 2025, cementing its reputation as a culinary icon.
Founded by husband and wife du, they first started after getting married, choosing the name Bun Bun because - in Chinese culture - they often put two of the same words together.
Tuong Hoang Chiem recalls, “…when we opened we mostly sold loaves of bread, but now we are famous for our crispy roast pork, roast chicken and fresh salad filled rolls.”
Today, it is famous for its crispy roast pork rolls, roast chicken sandwiches, and a diverse menu including BBQ pork, meatballs, rice paper rolls, and crunchy spring rolls.
Bun Bun sells between 600 and 1,100 rolls daily, with weekends attracting customers from across Victoria. Persistence turned Bun Bun’s roast pork rolls into a bestseller, helping the business stand out in a competitive market. For its founder, the recipe for success remains simple: hard work, authenticity, and a passion for great food.
Tuong Hoang Chiem said, “The way that we make bread is the same as how we did it when we started Bun Bun Bakery. And I am here for about 15 hours a day, seven days a week.
The hours here are long, and being a baker involves a lot of hard work every day. Some bakers try, but you either have it or you don’t.”
Bun Bun Bakery is located at 1/288 Springvale Road in Springvale.
