Council's sixth Disability Action Plan sets out how Council will work with people with disability, carers, community organisations, service providers, businesses and government agencies to improve access, inclusion and participation across the municipality. While Council has an important leadership role, many actions will be achieved through partnerships, collaboration and advocacy with other organisations and levels of government.
The Plan was developed with people with disability, carers, service providers, advocates and the broader community, and reflects local priorities, experiences and aspirations.
Our Vision
The City of Greater Dandenong is committed to ensuring people with disability, their families and carers feel welcome, respected and included in community life.
Priority Areas
Employment and Economic Participation
Council will work with employers, training providers, businesses and community organisations to support greater access to employment, training and economic opportunities for people with disability. This includes encouraging inclusive employment practices, strengthening employment pathways and supporting carers to balance work and caring responsibilities.
Accessible and Inclusive Community Infrastructure
Council will continue to improve the accessibility of public spaces, facilities and services. This includes involving people with disability in planning and design, supporting more accessible community infrastructure, and advocating to other agencies for improvements such as accessible public transport.
Support for Carers, Families and Access to Services
Council recognises the vital role of carers and families and will work with service providers and community organisations to improve access to information, services and community connections. This includes promoting resources, improving access to information and supporting a more inclusive service system.
Community Inclusion, Awareness and Leadership
Council will work with people with disability, community groups and local organisations to build a community where everyone feels valued and included. This includes increasing disability awareness, supporting leadership opportunities, promoting co-design and reducing barriers to participation in community life.
Community Consultation
The Disability Action Plan 2026-30 has been shaped by extensive community consultation with people with disability, carers, families, service providers, advocates and community members. Feedback identified key priorities including accessible infrastructure, transport, employment, access to information and services, support for carers, community awareness and ongoing involvement of people with disability in decision-making. Community feedback showed strong support for the Plan and confirmed it reflects local priorities.
