Field of Future Ecologies

June - August 2026

Harmony Square, central Dandenong

Created as part of Primary Succession, this installation accompanies the immersive exhibition by artist duo Wona Bae and Charlie Lawler at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre. Within the world of Primary Succession, life gradually re-emerges through mineral, microbial, and crystalline processes.

In Field of Future Ecologies, Bae and Lawler present a luminous array of incubation cells cultivating mineral lifeforms over time, like a speculative nursery for pioneer species. Encased within a glass-walled cube in the town square, the installation gradually evolves across the duration of the exhibition, with delicate crystalline formations emerging in response to subtle environmental shifts within the space. As daylight fades, ultraviolet light activates the work, transforming the cube into an electric field of colour and slow-moving change. Oscillating between laboratory, greenhouse and public monument, the work imagines new ecologies assembling themselves after environmental collapse.
