Electric vehicles for a more sustainable city

Cleaner air, lower emissions and a more sustainable future are driving Greater Dandenong City Council’s transition to electric vehicles.

As part of our commitment to climate action, we are replacing fleet vehicles with lower-emission alternatives to create a healthier environment for current and future generations.

Greater Dandenong Mayor, Cr Sophie Tan said transport was one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Climate change is no longer a distant issue. By transitioning our vehicles to electric alternatives we can reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future,” Mayor Tan said.

“We have already replaced 76% of our passenger cars with hybrid and electric vehicles, and we are committed to replacing all cars with low emission alternatives by 2030.

“Cleaner transport benefits the whole community and is part of our broader vision for Greater Dandenong to be a green city committed to a sustainable future.”

We are also working to find greener alternatives for our larger vehicles. So far we have introduced five trucks and four electric vans including the colourful Our Bright Green Future Education Electric Van which stands out at community events.

“When each of our larger vehicles is due for replacement, we are investigating the options available to reduce their impact on the environment,” Mayor Tan said.

“With the electric vehicle market rapidly growing we know there will be more options in the coming years and we look forward to embracing new technology to help us reduce our overall carbon footprint to zero.”

As a Council, we are committed to being an industry leader and showing our community there are steps we can all take to create a more sustainable city for future generations.
