Greater Dandenong’s next generation of storytellers were celebrated at the Write It Out Creative Writing and Networking Event at Springvale Community Hub earlier this month.
In the lead up to the celebration, budding writers aged between 12 and 25 had the opportunity to take part in the Write It Out short story and illustration competition.
Entrants responded to a series of prompts on themes including A Whole New World, Home Away from Home, Looking Forward to the Future and A City of Many Colours.
The young creatives’ outstanding entries were celebrated at the event, where participants also took part in creative writing workshops led by respected authors Danielle Binks and Kelly Wilson.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Phillip Danh, presented awards to the competition’s finalists and winners. Cr Danh said the competition highlighted the incredible talent of young people across Greater Dandenong.
“Greater Dandenong is home to young people from many different backgrounds and cultures, each with their own experiences, perspectives and stories to tell. The Write It Out competition let these voices be heard and celebrated.”
“This year’s competition received more than 100 submissions, which is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the talent that exists within our community.”
The celebration event and competition were delivered by Greater Dandenong City Council with support from Readings and the Emerging Writers Festival.
