Lifting the lid on food waste (Our Bright Green Future News September 2025)

compost

A single lettuce can take up to 25 years to break down in landfill – but only about 1 month if it is composted.

That’s because in landfill, foods break down without the help of oxygen and decomposers like worms and slugs. This creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that speeds up climate change.

About one-third of what goes into household rubbish bins is food waste.

By keeping food waste out of landfill, we can:

  • Cut methane emissions
  • Protect the environment
  • Support a more sustainable food system
