Oasis Aquatics and Wellbeing – Recognising the past in building the new

Oasis Aquatics and Wellbeing

At its meeting on Monday 20 April, Council resolved to formally name the new centre being built at Mills Reserve, and call it ‘Oasis Aquatics and Wellbeing.’

The name was selected following extensive community engagement, with feedback gathered from a broad and diverse cross section of local residents. Consultation results showed strong and consistent support for retaining the name Oasis, reflecting the deep emotional and historical connection the community has with the existing Dandenong Oasis.

The old Oasis, which is at the end of its useful life, will be de-commissioned and largely demolished, making way for the new Oasis Aquatics and Wellbeing.

Mayor of Greater Dandenong, Cr Sophie Tan said the community feedback on the name was clear.

“The Oasis name holds a special place in the hearts of our community. There were many fond memories of the old Dandenong Oasis. People talked about what a great word it is, and what a lovely meaning it has. In considering alternative options, they just weren’t as good as what we already had.”

She said, “We understood it was important to keep the name Oasis, while delivering a modern, inclusive and welcoming new facility, that emphasises health and wellbeing for everyone.  I’m pleased we’ve settled on a name that reflects what our community told us.”

“I’d like to thank those who took part in the engagement activities and shared their views, helping shape the future of this significant community facility.”

Fiona Preston, CEO of South East Leisure, which operates the Dandenong Oasis, said, “This name acknowledges the Oasis our community knows and loves, while clearly marking the transition to a new and exciting phase for the Greater Dandenong community. Oasis Aquatics and Wellbeing will deliver modern facilities, services and programs designed to meet evolving community needs.”

Works on the new centre are underway, with the facility on track to open in 2027.

The name Oasis Aquatics and Wellbeing will now be submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for formal registration.
