Recycling Mattresses (Our Bright Green Future News November 2025)

People in hi-vis carrying a mattress

Did you know that up to 90% of a mattress can be recycled?

Each year 1.8 million mattresses are discarded in Australia. Some of these are collected and recycled through Council services like Hard Rubbish collections, however around 700,000 mattresses each year end up in landfill. This contributes to environmental pollution and wasting valuable materials like steel, timber and foam. Many are also illegally dumped in our streets and bushlands.

The good news is that recycling your old mattress is not only possible, it’s easy. Through initiatives like our Reuse and Recycle Drop-Off Days, residents can responsibly dispose of unwanted household items including mattresses.

Once collected, the mattresses are dismantled:

  • Steel springs are sent to Australian scrap metal recyclers.
  • Foam is repurposed into carpet underlay.
  • Timber from frames and bases is turned into mulch.

By recycling your mattress, you’re helping reduce landfill, conserve resources and support a cleaner, greener community.
