World Ocean Day - 8 June (Our Bright Green Future News June 2026)

Ocean

The ocean plays an important role in keeping our planet healthy. Even if you live far away from the beach, the ocean still helps you every day.

The ocean helps keep the Earth cool by soaking up heat from the sun and carbon from the air. This slows down climate change and helps keep temperatures more stable.

The ocean also helps us breathe. Tiny ocean plants produce about half of the oxygen we use every day.

The ocean connects countries, supports wildlife and helps keep natural systems working properly.

What we do on land can affect the ocean. Rubbish, chemicals, paint and pollution can wash into rivers and end up in the sea, harming ocean life and habitats.

Three actions you can take to help the ocean.

  1. Use less plastic by choosing reusable bags, bottles, cups and lunch boxes.
  2. Reduce litter by putting rubbish in bins and picking up litter when you see it.
  3. Protect the ocean by never tipping chemicals, oil or paint down drains.
