The Connections that Matter Project Report outlines the outcomes and insights from the Intercultural Dialogue and Social Cohesion Initiative delivered across South East Melbourne between November 2025 and February 2026.
The project was co-designed in partnership with a Steering Committee, Working Group and Community Testing Group, alongside the City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey, Cardinia Shire Council, the Municipal Association of Victoria, the Victorian Multicultural Commission, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, the Office for Multicultural Affairs and the Office for Social Cohesion.
The Intercultural Dialogue and Social Cohesion Initiative involved planning and co-designing tailored workshops using the Office for Social Cohesion's Connections that Matter Guide. The guide helped frame conversations around a shared vision for social cohesion and encouraged a whole-of-community approach, exploring the important roles played by families, community organisations, schools, workplaces, faith groups, businesses, media and all levels of government.
This report captures the experiences and perspectives shared by participants, highlighting key themes and identifying recommendations to strengthen social cohesion at the local level. It also highlights Council's important role in bringing people, communities, organisations and government together to support participation, strengthen connections and build a more inclusive and cohesive community.
