About Meningococcal disease

Invasive meningococcal disease is rare but very serious. It progresses rapidly, can be difficult to diagnose, and can lead to severe illness, disability and death.

The Meningococcal B vaccine helps protect you or your child against meningococcal disease. Meningococcal B is the most common cause of invasive meningococcal disease in Australia.

Cost 

The Meningococcal B vaccine is not free for most people in Victoria.

Who should have the vaccine?

Anyone who wants to reduce their risk of invasive meningococcal disease should have this vaccine. Particularly, the higher risk groups listed below.

Infants and young children

  • Age: From 6 weeks old
  • Doses: 2 or 3 doses, depending on the age at first dose
  • Each dose is given at least 8 weeks apart

Adolescents and young adults

  • Age: 14 years and over
  • Doses: 2 doses at least 8 weeks apart if you have not been vaccinated before

If you received the vaccine as an infant or young child, a single booster dose is recommended

Special risk groups (may be eligible for a free vaccine)

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children under 2 years of age
  • Children with certain medical or health risk conditions
  • Speak to our immunisation team or your doctor if you think this may apply to your child
