Why Neighbourhood Houses matter
In an increasingly digital world, genuine face-to-face connection is more important than ever. Neighbourhood Houses provide inclusive spaces where people can build relationships, reduce social isolation, develop skills and feel part of their community.
While many centres use online tools and digital programs to help people learn and participate in ways that suit them, their greatest strength lies in bringing people together through meaningful, in-person activities.
Support available:
- Social connection and belonging
- Community participation and inclusion
- Lifelong learning and personal growth
- Health and wellbeing
- Volunteerism and local leadership
- Community resilience and local support networks
For many, a Neighbourhood House is where friendships begin, confidence grows and opportunities emerge.
Learn local opportunities
Many Neighbourhood Houses provide Learn Local programs that support people to develop practical skills, improve job opportunities and keep learning.
Courses range from digital literacy and English language classes to accredited training and pathways into further education or employment.

Community-led and Supported
Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres are community-led organisations, managed by incorporated volunteer Committees of Management. These committees work with staff and volunteers to ensure that each centre remains welcoming, inclusive and responsive to local community needs.
Together, they create affordable and accessible places where people can learn, connect, share skills, and take part in local life.
There are many ways to get involved - by joining a program, volunteering , sharing your skills or becoming part of a committee. Community involvement helps shape the activities and opportunities offered at each centre.
Greater Dandenong's Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres are supported through funding and partnerships with:
• Greater Dandenong City Council
• Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE)
• Department of Health and Human Services
• Victorian and Australian Government departments
• Local businesses
• Philanthropic and community organisations
Your involvement helps strengthen our communities.
Neighbourhood House and Community Centres Framework
The Neighbourhood House and Community Centres Framework outlines the shared commitment between Council and local NHCCs to support strong, inclusive and connected communities.
Developed in partnership with local NHCCs, the Framework provides a foundation for collaboration and ensures Council and centres work together to deliver community-led programs, services and opportunities that respond to local needs.
The Framework includes:
• Council's vision and commitment to Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres
• The roles and responsibilities of Council and NHCCs
• Partnership arrangements based on collaboration and transparency
• Opportunities to promote programs, events and initiatives through Council channels
• Key Council contacts and support pathways
The Framework supports productive partnerships that help NHCCs continue providing welcoming spaces where residents can connect, learn, participate and belong.
