October is Motorcycle Awareness Month (MAM).

Motorcyclists face a higher risk of serious injury in a crash. Improving rider safety means having safe roads, safe speeds, well-maintained vehicles, and responsible road use.

Council works with riders, Victoria Police, road safety groups and the community to make motorcycling safer across the region.

Explore safety programs, training and resources, report road hazards and learn how to contribute to future road safety initiatives.

Motorcycle Crash Cards

A Motorcycle Crash Card gives emergency services important information if a rider is involved in a crash and unable to communicate. The card is completed by the rider and carried while riding. The card includes key details such as medical conditions, allergies and emergency contacts. Having a Crash Card with you can help emergency responders access critical information quickly when it matters most.

Accident Scene Management and First Aid Courses

Be prepared. Learn skills that could help save a life.

Knowing what to do after a motorcycle crash can make a real difference. Council supports Accident Scene Management and First Aid courses to give riders practical skills and confidence to respond safely in an emergency. Suitable for riders of all experience levels, the courses are delivered by experienced motorcyclists and healthcare professionals.

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users. These courses help riders develop potentially life-saving skills and contribute to a safer community for everyone.

What you’ll learn

  • How to manage a motorcycle crash scene safely
  • How to give basic first aid
  • How to assess injuries and respond to serious conditions
  • How to control severe bleeding
  • How to support an injured rider until emergency services arrive

  • A better understanding of how to help injured riders before professional help arrives

Course inclusions

  • Participants will receive:
    - A First Aid Certificate (accredited)
    - An ASMA Statement of Attendance
    - An ASMA patch
    - An ASMA helmet decal
    - An ASMA pact card

All training is delivered in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

Courses are held throughout the year at various locations. Stay tuned for courses offered in Dandenong.

Club or group bookings

Motorcycle clubs and community groups can request a private course for groups of 10 or more people. To request a session, contact Council's Transport team at roadsafety@cgd.vic.gov.au.

Help Shape Motorcycle Safety in Our Region

Motorcyclists know the roads better than most. We want to hear about your experiences to help make riding safer across our region.

Council is creating a Motorcycle Community Engagement Panel where riders can share feedback, raise concerns and help shape future road safety and transport planning. The panel will focus on local motorcycle issues and identify improvements that Council and its partners can support.

Who can join?

We're looking for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Whether you ride every day, ride occasionally or are new to motorcycling, your feedback is valuable.

Panel members may be asked to provide input on:

  • Road design and maintenance
  • Road conditions that affect rider safety
  • Road safety programs and initiatives
  • Proposed transport and infrastructure changes
  • Motorcycle parking and access
  • New and emerging motorcycle safety issues
  • Priorities within Council's Road Safety and Transport Strategy

You don't need any special qualifications or road safety expertise. We simply want to hear about your experiences as a rider.

What's involved?

The panel will meet approximately every six months.

There may also be opportunities to provide feedback on specific projects or road safety issues between meetings.

By joining, you can help influence local decisions and ensure the needs of motorcyclists are considered when planning and managing our transport network.

Report Dangerous Road Condition

Poor road conditions can be especially dangerous for motorcycle riders. Hazards such as potholes, loose gravel, debris and slippery surfaces can affect braking, steering and grip. Reporting these issues helps Council identify problems and make roads safer for everyone.

What to report

  • Potholes and damaged road surfaces
  • Uneven roads
  • Loose gravel, stones or debris
  • Oil, fuel or other slippery substances on the road
  • Damaged, missing or hard-to-see road signs
  • Faded or damaged line markings
  • Hazards around roadworks
  • Overgrown vegetation or objects affecting visibility

How to report

Poor road conditions can be reported via Council's Snap Send Solve.

  1. Take a photo of the issue
  2. Add the location
  3. Provide a brief description

This helps Council or other government agency assess the problem and act where needed.

Safety first: Never stop in an unsafe location or use your phone while riding.

Support after a Road Crash

A road crash can have a lasting impact on you, your family and those around you. If you have been affected by road trauma, support is available.

Amber Community is a Victorian not-for-profit organisation that provides free counselling, information and support to people affected by road crashes.

Available support

  • People injured in a road crash
  • Family members and friends
  • People who have lost a loved one
  • Carers
  • Drivers and passengers
  • Witnesses
  • Anyone affected by road trauma

Those affected do not need a referral to access support.

Road Trauma Awareness Seminars

Amber Community delivers Road Trauma Awareness Seminars (RTAS) in Dandenong and across Victoria. These seminars help people understand the real-life impacts of road crashes and encourage safer behaviour on our roads.

  • Explore common road risks and behaviours
  • Promote safer decision-making on the road
  • Share real-life experiences of people affected by road trauma
  • Increase understanding of the long-term impacts of road crashes on individuals, families and communities
