House Fires

All of us, no matter where we live, are at risk of a fire in our home. Most fires in the home are preventable by taking simple actions to reduce the risk. Everybody should have working smoke alarms, prepare an escape plan and check their house for possible causes of fire risk. To learn more about preventing house fires visit Home Fire – Emergency Prepare.

Bush and Grass Fires

Victoria is one of the most fire-prone areas in the world, so everyone could be affected by a fire at some time. Individuals and householders have a key role to play in keeping safe and preventing fires.

CFA has resources to help you understand your fire risk and know what to do before and during a fire.
Make it a habit to:

  • Check your Fire Danger Rating every day during summer.
  • Know if it is a day of Total Fire Ban.
  • Check for warnings using at least two sources of information, especially on hot, dry, windy days

Total Fire Bans

Total Fire Bans tell you what fires you can and cannot have and what activities are banned on a particular day. Even if your area has not been declared a Total Fire Ban, Fire Danger Period restrictions may still apply. Can I or Can't I? |

Fire Danger Ratings

Fire Danger Ratings - Tell you how dangerous a fire would be if one started. The higher the rating the more dangerous the conditions.
Turn on the Fire Danger Ratings on the map and look at the rating for the next four days.

Find out what you can and can't do during the declared Fire Danger Period, and on days of Total Fire Ban, when fires in the open air are legally restricted.

Burning Off

Within Greater Dandenong City Council, a permit is required to Burn Off on your property.

Burning Off is generally not permitted due to the negative environmental and amenity impacts. Refuse and waste is to be disposed of by means other than burning.

In the extremely rare circumstances, where no other means are available, a burning off permit may be considered. Permits will not be issued during a declared fire danger period.
