Tamarix - A Cracking Multi-Generational Success

Tamarix has been supplying quality eggs to Melbourne for over six decades and continues to maintain a reputation of excellence in the industry.

The business’s roots stem back to the early 1960’s, when Italian immigrants Agostino and Alma Postregna purchased a property in Chapel Road, Keysborough, growing chickens and producing and selling eggs.

In partnership with extended family, the business continued to grow and eventually relocated to its current site in Bangholme in the early 1980’s.

Agostino’s son Andrew took over the reins from his late father in 2006, overseeing a capital expansion to two-storey sheds. Nowadays, Tamarix employs 23 people, including two of Andrew’s children, Siena and Sebastian.

Tamarix has approximately 120,000 birds on site and have plans underway for future expansion. They supply fresh quality eggs to cafes, bakeries and restaurants across Melbourne. Tamarix has two retail outlets one being at the Bangholme site called White & Yolk and the other owned by Andrew’s sister Teresa in Noble Park called Chapel Road Eggs.

Local Dandenong café, The Public’s Corner, have been using Tamarix as their egg supplier for approximately four years.

“Tamarix Eggs consistently provide us with daily fresh, delicious eggs,” manager Limoza Sejfulah says.

“Their quality is unmatched, it is truly the secret ingredient behind our satisfied customers.”

Sustainability and the environment are a big focus for Tamarix Eggs, they have A 200kw Solar system installed, are a Tesla destination charging site, have planted hundreds of gumtrees and scrubs to minimise their carbon footprint, and they are transitioning over to electric delivery vehicles and farm equipment over the next few years.

“We equate to roughly 1-2 per cent of Victoria’s egg production, so we’re quite small and agile,” says Tamarix operations manager Tim Sutton.

What makes Tamarix eggs so popular is the quality and freshness factor. Tamarix rear their own birds and manufacture their own poultry feed. Everything is automated - the egg belts inside the poultry house go directly into the grading floor, where the eggs are immediately sorted and packed, making them fresher for the end consumer.

“In animal agriculture, it’s always quality input equals quality output,” says Tim. “If you don’t look after the animals, they won’t look after you, and that’s what we believe,” hence the company slogan “For the finest eggs… The hen comes first”, says Tim.
