Artist Statement

Muderra Way’s iconic road artwork and pillar murals make it home to Greater Dandenong’s first large-scale Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders’ peoples public art gateway. The road was be renamed 'Muderra Way' (pronounced Muderra (Moo-Dah-Ra) - Torrential Rain) in Bunurong language. 

Artists Kobi Sainty (Bunurong and Palawa), Koorrin Edwards (Bunurong, Gunnai, Gunditjmara, Mutti and Yorta Yorta), and Robert Michael Young (Gunnai, Wiradjuri, Yorta and Gunditjmara) collaborated to design and deliver traffic calming murals across the length of Muderra Way and four rail bridge pillars.

Each artist brings a distinct element to the work: Robert’s raindrops, Koorrin’s meeting place, and Kobi’s flowing river symbolising new life, purity, and water. Together with the audio guides, people can experience the visual story and First Nations voices through movement, landscape, and the meaning of place. 

Senior Cultural Heritage Representative and Traditional Owner with BLCAC, Uncle Shane Clarke, said the project marked an important shift in how First Nations stories are shared in public spaces.  
“For a long time, people have been making decisions for us,” Uncle Shane said.

“The work through Dandenong Council has been very respectful all the way. They acknowledge and highlight the First Nations people, Bunurong, on our lands in the City of Greater Dandenong. They’ve always done it.”  

The Muderra Way project was delivered through a partnership between Greater Dandenong City Council, the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, and the Victorian Government and constructed as part of the Noble Park Level Crossing Removal Project.

About the Artists

Artists Koby Sainty (Bunurong and Palawa) and Koorrin Edwards (Bunurong, Gunnai, Gunditjmara, Mutti and Yorta Yorta) and Robert Michael Young (Gunnai, Wiradjuri, Yorta and Gunditjmara), an experienced mural and sculpture artist, to honour the connection Bunurong people have to our city.

The artist collaborated to design and deliver traffic calming murals across the length of Muderra Way and four rail bridge pillars. 

The project is being delivered in collaboration with Council, the Bunurong Land Council and the Noble Park Revitalisation Board and is funded by the Victorian Government’s Suburban Revitalisation Program.
