Other Waste and Recycling Options

Sometimes you have extra waste that can not go into any of your household bins or the hard waste collection.

By recycling and recovering our waste, we can reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.

Below are some websites on how to recycle and dispose of specific items. Many items are accepted free of charge while some incur a fee. 

It is always best to call first to confirm opening hours and any fees.

Recycling Near You  - a Planet Ark A to Z recycling directory, providing detailed information on waste items and where you can take them to be recycled.

Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group - a Victorian State Government Statutory Body responsible for coordinating and facilitating the delivery of waste management and resource recovery across metropolitan Melbourne. Search for the nearest transfer station and recycling centre that will take specific items.

Recycling Stations

Recycling stations allow residents to safely dispose of problem waste items that are not allowed in the kerbside garbage, recycling and garden waste bins. 

Residents can now recycle their household batteries, mobile phones, CD's, DVD's and light globes. Recycling stations can be found at each of our Customer Service Centres.

If the wrong waste is placed in any of the kerbside bins, they can contribute to the contamination of recyclable materials or leachate in landfill.

They also contain heavy metals and components harmful to human health and the environment.

It is best to dispose of them safely and correctly. 

Accepted Items

Batteries

Any brand of AA, AAA, C, D and 9V batteries (both rechargeable and non-rechargeable)

  • Batteries used in cameras, torches, toys, appliances.
  • Please do not bring in any leaky batteries.  
  • Car batteries are not accepted.   
     

Mobile phones

  • All mobile handsets, batteries and accessories.

CD’s and DVD’s

  • VHS tapes are not accepted.
     

Fluorescent light globes and bulbs

  • Accept all sized compact fluorescent globes (energy efficient globes) - household lights only.
  • Please do not bring broken light globes.
  • Fluorescent tubes are not accepted.

Detox Your Home

Household Chemical Collection Program

Detox your Home is Victorian Government’s FREE household chemical collection program.

The program is run by Sustainability Victoria, in partnership with local councils.

Detox your Home is a safe, free and easy-to-use service to dispose of unwanted, highly toxic household chemicals without harming your health or the environment.

The collected items are recovered for recycling, therefore diverted from landfill.

Detox Your Home - Permanent drop off sites

Household paint, batteries, and fluorescent lights – which are less toxic than household chemicals ­(but also a more common waste item) can be disposed of throughout the year at a permanent drop-off site.

Detox Your Home – Drop off events

City of Greater Dandenong, in partnership with Sustainability Victoria hosts one Detox Your Home mobile collection each year.

Highly toxic household chemicals are accepted. 

There is no limit on the volume of materials you can drop-off. The maximum acceptable weight or size of any single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres.

Electronic waste (E-waste)

E-waste (electronic waste) refers to electronic products that are no longer wanted or working.

If it’s got a plug, battery or cord and is unwanted, it’s e-waste. 

It covers a whole range of items from work, home or even the garden shed. From old phones, computers and household appliances to power tools and toys. E-waste (or electronic waste) is full of valuable resources we can reuse, as well as some nasty materials that are bad for the environment.

E-waste is not accepted in the kerbside garbage, recycling and garden waste bins. 

Where can I take my e-waste (electronic waste)?

While you can’t put your e-waste in your kerbside rubbish, recycling and garden waste bins, residents can take it to one of many different locations around the state to recycle it.

You can find your nearest e-waste recycling depot by visiting Sustainability Victoria e-waste page, or have your e-waste collected from your home through eMeals - a national program that tackles electronic waste whilst helping people in need through meal donations. 

There are a range of recycling and disposal options available within (or in the vicinity of) Greater Dandenong - depending on what the e-waste item is.

Council hosts a range of waste and recycling events throughout the year.

Re-use and Recycle Drop Off Day

Council runs a number of free drop-off events throughout the year for any unwanted larger electronic and household goods. 

This is a great chance to clear some space around the house, reduce landfill and give items a new life. 

Items are donated to a range of charities for re-use, as well as taken to recycling facilities to be recycled into new products.

This free service is in addition to your one free annual hard waste collection.

Homecycle

Council runs a free one-off kerbside collection each year for any unwanted smaller electronics, household goods, clothing and toys. 

Items are donated to a range of charities for re-use, as well as taken to recycling facilities to be recycled into new products.

Collection will occur on the day after your normal yellow lid recycling bin is emptied.
