School and Early Learning Centre Waste Education Program

Education on minimising waste and increasing recycling can start early in a child’s life. Schools and early learning centres play a vital role in communicating these messages to children, families and throughout our community.

Council provides a range of free waste education programs for Early Learning Centres, primary and secondary schools within the municipality and can also assist Early Learning Centres and schools in establishing a recycling and composting program.

Waste Minimisation School Education (WMSEd) Program

The Waste Minimisation School Education (WMSEd) Program is an initiative that has been developed by Greater Dandenong Council to help schools with the development and implementation of a waste minimisation action plan.

The program is facilitated by an experienced waste educator who will aid schools to develop and implement action plans to minimise waste and improve recycling efforts. The program is tailored to each participating school’s individual goals and specific school community.

The main objectives of the WMSEd program are:

  • To engage schools in managing their waste according to the waste hierarchy, i.e. identify opportunities for avoidance, reduction and reuse
  • To assist schools in the development of a Waste Minimisation Action Plan
  • To reduce the volume of waste being generated in participating schools through implementation of recycling/organic waste separation and collection
  • Increase the knowledge and awareness of waste minimisation within the broader Greater Dandenong community

Council will provide participating schools with resources such as, a compost bin or worm farm, collection crates for classrooms, posters and artwork and a tailored action plan to assist them with their waste reduction initiatives.

For more information or to register for the program, contact Council’s Waste Education Officer at wasteevents@cgd.vic.gov.au.
