Regional Local Government Homelessness and Social Housing Charter

The City of Greater Dandenong is part of a regional alliance of 13 councils, representing over 2 million residents across Melbourne’s east and southeast, who have joined in a unified voice calling for urgent action for more social housing to end homelessness.

In August 2025, Greater Dandenong City Council took on the role of Secretariat for the Regional Local Government Homelessness and Social Housing Charter Group, continuing the strong leadership, support and advocacy of Monash Council.

About the Charter

The Regional Local Government Homelessness and Social Housing Charter was established in 2020 following a forum of CEOs and senior staff from participating councils. This forum, initiated by Monash Council in November 2019, brought together local governments, housing providers, peak bodies, State Government representatives and an advocate with lived experience of homelessness to develop a coordinated response.

The Charter has guided collaborative advocacy and research efforts across the region. In October 2025, the Charter Group will convene a strategic forum to review and determine its key advocacy priorities moving forward.
