Family Violence Definitions and Facts

Definitions

Family violence

Family violence refers to violence between family members. This includes violence between partners, siblings, parent and child, and other relatives. It is any behaviour that is physically, sexually, emotionally, financially or psychologically abusive or threatening. It is behaviour that controls or dominates a family member and makes them afraid.

Gender equality

Gender equality means that women and men have equal value, treatment and chances in society.

Gender equity

Gender equity means making sure that resources, chances and decision-making are fair to both men and women. This may mean women get more resources, chances or power of decision-making. Gender equity is the things we do to achieve gender equality.

Gender stereotypes

Gender stereotypes are expectations held by our society. They are about how society expects men and women to behave in public and private life.

Primary prevention

Primary prevention includes practices to prevent violence against women before it occurs. Promoting equality and respect between women and men is a key way to prevent violence against women.

Respect

Respect means considering another person’s feelings, wishes and rights.

Secondary prevention

Secondary prevention includes actions used to intervene early when there are early signs of violent behaviour.

Social norms

Social norms are attitudes held in our society about the appropriate and expected behaviour of individuals and groups.

Tertiary prevention

Tertiary prevention includes support and treatment for people who have experienced violence.

Violence against women

Violence against women is an act of violence that causes harm or suffering to women. This also includes threats or taking someone's freedom away. This could happen in public or private life.

The booklets will guide faith and spiritual leaders to better understand the issue. They help understand the causes we need to address if we want to prevent violence against women.
